Welcome to In Between Beats
Welcome to In Between Beats, the blog that celebrates the rich and diverse cultural heritage of drumming, offering practical tips and strategies to improve your drum practice and drum lesson productivity, gear guides and explainers.
We hope you find inspiration to boost your creativity as developing drummers.
Hello from Pete
I’m Pete, and I run In Between Beats. I started the blog because I love drums.
I love learning about the history of different drumming cultures, improving my playing and of course I love drum gear.
I’ve been playing for around 30 years in a range of genres and contexts - from small bars to festivals and live radio. From teaching from my parents’ house, to recording in professional studios. I’m currently getting involved in the jazz scene in my local city.
I use In Between Beats to share thoughts and research with developing drummers. If you’re still developing in your drumming journey this site is for you.
I have played lots of different drums over the past 30 years, used electronic equipment like drum machines and samplers and the more functional accessories like cases and hardware. I’ve spent a lot of time understanding technical features through research and speaking to other drummers and just getting my hands dirty with the gear.
My reviews and advice on In Between Beats are based on this knowledge and experience. I hope I can help you to make the best equipment choices to get the sound you want and play in the context you want.
Outside of the drumming world I’m a psychologist.
I completed a PhD in psychology in 2016 and have been working as a behavioural scientist professionally since then.
With In Between Beats I’ll share my ideas about how psychology can teach us about how to be better drummers.
I hope you enjoy the site.
Feel free to leave me any feedback or ask a question at inbetweenbeats.info@gmail.com.
ABOUT IN BETWEEN BEATS
We're always looking for ways to inspire drummers to push their own boundaries and develop so they can unleash the fun and expression that comes from being a drummer. In Between Beats has a section dedicated to quick lessons and tips, which also includes quick looks at inspirational drummers and ideas.
Gear guides
We provide gear guides and explainers to help beginner and intermediate drummers navigate the wide range of equipment available to us. These reviews are based on many years experience of playing different drum equipment, research and knowledge of the technical features, and speaking to other drummers. We get products in to review as well as using knowledge from having played them in the past in different contexts.
We hope this will help you to choose the best equipment to inspire you to learn and play.
On these pages we often share a link to places you can buy this gear such as the Guitar Center. If you follow the link and make a purchase we’d receive a small commission (which doesn't cost you any extra). This helps us to run the site.
Features
Drumming has been a part of human culture for thousands of years and all of the different corners of the world contribute to the richness we see in our art form today. We celebrate and explore this cultural history by delving into the traditions of the rhythms and instruments of Brazil, to the significance of New Orleans jazz drumming and everything in between.
Drummer psychology
Finally as it’s run by a psychologist, the blog is also dedicated to sharing the latest insights from psychology and behavioural science to help you improve your drum practice productivity.
You’ll find a range of tips and strategies to help you get the most out of your practice time and stay inspired as well as practice tips that have helped us along the way.
We hope you enjoy the site and that you find inspiration and help to squeeze as much fun out of drumming as you can!
